Summer has come to Melbourne so it's time for some well lit photos and lazy outdoor brunches! This one is a bit of drive out to Brunswick West but I had to do it to try the legendary Croque Monsieur - I wonder if it was worth the drive...?
Lets get started with the main event - the Crispy Croque Monsieur (Shaved leg ham, swiss cheese, cheese & chive cream, coated in crisp breadcrumbs and fried with home made tomato relish). WOW...worth the hype for sure and is simply melt in your mouth delicious. Despite how it looked its not as heavy and rich as you would suspect and the cheese & chive cream really set off the flavours. Best croque I've ever had.
The Smork hot chocolate was also quite nice and creamy and I loved the touch off the scorched mini marshmallows on top which added a bitter touch that cut through the rich chocolate as you drank it.
Unfortunately...thats where the good news ends here. We also shared the Candy Apple Pancakes (Walnut praline, rhubarb and blueberry compote, fresh mint, vanilla marscapone and pure canadian maple syrup) that were underwhelming at best. The pancakes were dought and moist but more so in an oily way that wasn't pleasant. Marscapone had no vanilla to it and had a gluey texture in the mouth. The peanut brittle was way too hard on the teeth - felt like I almost broke a tooth. Only positive was the fruit was fresh and jam was acidic and sourness to cut through how gluey and oily the rest of the dish was.
I'd give this place a miss unless you're in the area and just looking for a good coffee. Staff are really friendly and I loved the outdoor area - but the food wasn't up to scratch.
