Northcote is starting to feel like brunch central with all the new spots popping up this year! Latest cafe on the block is Northcote STN. Perfectly situated right near the main shopping area it is well set to take the Northcote brunch scene by storm...but did the food stack up?
But before I answer the all important question on taste - let's have a look at decor and service. Beautiful, classic, bright...the makings of a beautiful photo-worthy cafe. But I'm not too sure on service and whether or not it was bad because I was sitting outside but it was slow and staff seemed disinterested at best. Felt pretty ignored and like I was annoying them whenever I flagged them down to ask something. Food was incredibly slow too.
Now on to food - unfortunately it was average at best. On this occasion we chose to get two sweets - Red Velvet Pancakes (coconut meringue, freeze dried fruits, raspberry, white chocolate soil, marscapone) and Chai Brioche (infused corella pear, peanut butter parfait, chocolate, mandarin, espresso and star anise glaze). Both dishes suffered from the same flaw of not enough sweetness in the dish. The pancakes were ugly in presentation and tasted much the same with the saving grace being the vanilla marscapone which helped lift it a bit. The chai brioche had the benefit of spice and grew on me while I was eating it. The mix of mandarin and chocolate didn't work with the spices in the brioche but I think this could be fixed with a nice syrup to tie it all together.
Drinks were nice, I had the Tropicana - healthy and fresh which I really enjoyed.
With Northcote STN being in such a jam-packed brunch area - I would say there are better places to head to if you are looking for a great meal and not just a good one.
