Faraday’s Cage, Fitzroy 3065

The latest word around town was that this was the new stand out in the Melbourne brunch scene so of course I had to give it a shot. Located in the heart of Fitzroy its a driver's worst nightmare - but was it worth it?

Faraday's Cage is set up in an old warehouse building with high ceilings and skylights through out that really brightened up the atmosphere inside. It was a good mix of a modern/cultural/industrial feel to it. The staff were extremely attentive...offering us share plates and clearing plates as soon as we were done so we'd have more space for photos (very important to a group of instagrammers).

Now on to the food - first up The Mushroom (Sauteed mushrooms, house baked brioche, fresh herbs, smoked mozzarella, hazelnut crumb, crispy poached egg, pumpkin puree, truffle oil). This is the dish that I've been pushing left right and centre to my friends - it is delicious. It's a combination of delicate flavours that work well together with the highlight being the pumpkin puree which is so smooth and perfectly seasoned. This dish also defined value for money with SO MANY MUSHROOMS that worked well with the cheesy toast that went with it. Also be warned...this is no ordinary poached egg. It has been tempura deep fried to offer a crispy skin to it - I didn't care much for it and didn't add much to taste but the wow factor and curiousity was there.

The other savoury we tried was the Croque Monsieur. To be honest, pretty standard with a good amount of cheese and creaminess. Could've done with some more ham to add some more saltiness and additional flavours to break up the creamy richness.

As usual, Ricotta Pancakes (Caramelised white chocolate, broken meringue, passionfruit, maple syrup dehydrated strawberry, lemon balm, marscapone & berries) had to be tried and tested. LOVED IT - so doughy and sweet but well balanced with the surprisingly unsweet marscapone. I normally down marscapone on its own at brunch - don't do that here, it is only there to reduce sweetness in the dish. Lots of fruits and meringue were also on the dish offering little pops of freshness and additional sweetness to keep you interested as you demolish it!

GIVE FARADAY'S CAGE A SHOT - I really enjoyed it. The overall experience was friendly and yummy with very little that I was able to fault.
