Sardi, Hawthorn 3122

Located in an odd part of Hawthorn with not much competition around, I wasn't too sure what to expect apart from the famous Oreo Waffles. Awkwardly quiet once inside and with not much going on, I was unsure why this was such a well known cafe. Let's see if the food can fill in the questionable gaps.

We visited on Melbourne Cup weekend so I'm not sure if that was able to explain how quiet it was as it was a Saturday morning, the most popular time for brunch. I found the atmosphere somewhat chilly with no music and it was VERY quiet. Staff were great though and attentive. Decor was standard with very large tables which is great for sharing.

On this occasion we got the Spice Up Your Life (Chilli scrambled eggs, bacon, chorizo, mushrooms) as our savoury dish. Definitely don't pick this dish if you can't handle your spice as you can literally see the chilli in it. Apart from that...a fairly standard dish. Nothing stood out and nothing really that really screamed amazing. Recommend using your hands - the bread is hard to cut through.

The all important desserts were Banana Bread French Toast (Mascarpone, roasted pears, salted caramel) and the much hyped Oreo Waffles (Dark chocolate, Oreo mascarpone, berries & vanilla ice cream). I enjoyed both these dishes as they did not overload on sweetness - with both balancing sweet and savoury well.

With the Oreo Waffles the waffles were quite dense but well cooked. I didn't enjoy the full dip of dark chocolate on two of the waffles as I would've preferred the choice of how much chocolate I got with each mouthful. The oreo marscapone also added nothing to the dish and could've been left off the plate.

The French toast didn't really taste like french toast - more like just really dense spiced toast. The poached pear was excellent but it did need a lot more than just a drizzle of salted caramel to balance it (it need A LOT more salted caramel).

Overall - this was a fairly standard experience. Nothing to impress but also nothing huge to complain about. It if you live in the area I imagine this would be a great regular place to go to but it's not worth the travel out there.

Recommend that you try out the Liven app if you head here as well! I tried it out for the first time and it was a great experience paying on my phone and getting a couple of credit
