This little restaurant has caused quite a stir on the Melbourne food scene since its opening 5 years ago. Hidden away in Little Bourke its unassuming but enter through those doors and be prepared to be transported to Italy!
This is a restaurant that I have continued to visit over many years with not only the food bringing me back but the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff. Rarely do you find a place with so many accolades that can still conduct itself with a distinct lack of pretentiousness but Tipo00 has managed to achieve this - maintaining its consistency over the 4 years I've been visiting.
Over the years I have tried many of their dishes but two of the highlights that I have to point out are the Gnocchi, Tagliolini and Tipomisu. These dishes epitomise the best of the best here and will constantly leave you wanting more.
The Gnocchi di patate (Braised duck, porcini mushroom & pecorino pepata) is a constantly raved upon dish but for good reason. The pillows of potato are simply perfect and silky smooth and the serving is highly generous compared to other Italian restaurants. The sauce and duck are authentic and full of flavour - the sauce being a perfect accompaniment to the gnocchi with its meatiness and acidity of the tomato.
I've never been one for seafood pasta so this was really a step out of my comfort zone but wow - the Tagliolini al nero (Squid ink tagliolini, squid & bottarga) was worth the wait. Normally squid ink would overload the plate with flavours of the seas...like the gunky bits (not good)...but Tipo00 bucks this trend. There's a perfect balance with most of the seafood taste coming from the squid and the pasta simply adding a saltiness to the dish that keeps you going in for more.
The fancy version of tiramisu that you you didn't know you needed - Tipomisù (Chocolate, coffee & mascarpone). Amazing and though I would've preferred presentation in the classic cup style it was still a highlight. That chocolatey goodness cannot be passed up - perfection on a plate.
Get to this future Melbourne institution as soon as you can...or if you can get a booking!
