From the people behind Operator 25, this cafe on the 'brunch side' of Prahran is modern, sleek and HUGE. Non-descript at first glance but what does the food offer and does this spot deserve a look in compared to its competitors?
Walking in on a Saturday morning - this spot was relatively empty which was strange and made me a bit apprehensive on what I was going to get. I made a visit during its hype days and now wanted to check it out again to see if it was still as good as I remember.
First dish for the day was the Avocado (Polenta and sweet potato croquette, pickled beetroot, charred corn, pomegranate and poached eggs). Wow...it was so delicious, fresh and light that I just kept going bak for more. The sweet potato croquette was more cake than rosti but either way i loved the crispy outside and soft potatoey inside. I'm also not normally a fan of polenta but it really worked as a vehicle for the other flavour and to help control flavour overall. Also a generous amount of creamy avo to complement the freshness of the radish, beetroot and corn. YUM YUM YUM...the yolk also worked well to blend all the flavours and worked as a good sauce. Wish the dish was a bit bigger though - was a tad small for a solo brunch dish.
The main event at Middletown though - Cookies and Cream Waffles (Charcoal and white chocolate waffles, strawberries, stone fruit jelly, toasted hazelnuts, maple syrup and vanilla bean ice cream). I LOVED THIS DISH. The waffles were perfectly crispy and the charcoal was not overwhelming at all - using its slightly bitter flavouring to dilute the surrounding sweetness of the fruits and jelly. The crispiness of the waffle also created an interesting texture in your mouth when combined with the ice cream - almost like eating hot and cold at the same time. While eating this you can tell someone has put a lot of thought into the flavours. Only complaint would be that I wanted more syrup because as it was there was nothing there really.
The Tropical Smoothie (Mangoes, passionfruit, banana, milk, coconut yogurt) was a poor choice though. All I could taste was banana and yogurt and nothing else...wish there could've been more of a balance.
This is an excellent brunch choice if you're looking for a spot with no line and high quality food. I wish that it were more busy because it definitely deserves more credit on the brunch scene and with that a better atmosphere that comes with more customers. HEAD THERE AND EAT THE WAFFLES - you won't be disappointed!
