On a rainy gloomy morning what I really needed was a great brunch to warm me up. Turn out Fledgling Espresso was just the right spot to do it. Warm and cosy environment and some extremely friendly staff set the mood for a fantastic brunch but what were the highlights?!
Fledgling Espresso is a small cafe based in Carlton, but is definitely not one of your usual Lygon Street cafes. We managed to get a seat out front but there was additional seating out the back so lines aren't all that common so a great place to drop by for no wait.
On to the food, Eggs Benny (Hollandaise, smoked salmon, english muffin) was our only savoury offering for the day. I really have not much to say about this one. It was good...your standard egg benny. Nothing spectacular but good none the less.
On to the desserts, Lemon Curd Pancakes (Berry compote, fresh fruit, cinnamon mascarpone) were again quite standard, the pancakes were quite thin and could've been fluffier as a better vehicle for the compote and mascarpone. Flavour of the pancakes was nice and vanilla-ish. The lemon curd was by far the most interesting and flavoursome element of this dish though slightly on the too tart side. The wow factor was still missing though...hopefully the next dish can bring it!
I'll start this with WOW. The Banana French Toast (House banana bread, berry compote, pistachio praline, salted caramel, cinnamon mascarpone) was awesome! The banana bread added some great flavour and uniqueness to the dish and the crunch of fry on the French toast added texture as well. I also really enjoyed the mascarpone as it added a creamy texture that balanced with the tart berry compote - adding some freshness. It is quite a dense dish though so keep your stomach ready for it and some water on the side.
Finally, I HIGHLY recommend the hot chocolate as it was so light and delicious. It wasn't too rich so I was able to drink 2 mugs over brunch....amazing.
This spot has some amazing dishes and with a bit of research on what to eat you could have a great time.My friends who had other dishes also highly recommended a couple of the other savouries so don't let this review stop you from trying the whole menu!
