I was lucky enough to be invited to Holla to experience their unique Asian take on brunch! Located on the perfect strip of shops to represent this - the flavours hinted at its origins but in such a creative way.
Such a a beautiful cafe that was overflowing with greenery (have a look at the photos below for a taste of it!)...all I wanted was to dig into the food. With so much to choose from I was tempted by the alcoholic cocktails but I was well behaved - definitely worth a trip back to try them some time.
First off was the most asian dish we could pick on the menu, the Szechuan Scallion (Szechuan spiced brisket, tofu miso puree, Chinese leaves and shoots, scallion pancake, fried egg). My initial thoughts when seeing this dish were damn that fried egg was beautiful. Perfectly yellow and oozy. Cutting into the dish though...the scallion pancake had obviously been taken too far with it being a bit too dark and bitter - it needed to be less dense and more light to add some good texture to the plate. The brisket was well cooked and flavourful with a unique kick of spice which I loved. My main complaints with this dish would be the actual pancake and the overdose of mayo on the veggies. Overall this dish reminded me of a veggie packed version of broken rice which is my favourite dish from Vietnamese cuisine.
- The Oreo Milkshake was on the thin side in terms of thickness but that didn't compromise on flavour at all. Perfectly Oreo taste with the crunchy bits of biscuit for an extra wow. Toed the line on too sweet though.
- The Berry & Acai Smoothie (Organic Acai, Blueberry, Raspberry, Blackberry Passionfruit, Coconut Water) had a strong raspberry taste but wasn't too sweet which I liked after the Oreo Milkshake. Quite thick in texture so it felt healthy and packed full of the good stuff - no watering down here!
And the reason I wanted to come here to begin with...the Croffle S’mores (Raspberry pistachio parfait, strawberry curd, fresh berries, pistachio crumb & rose syrup). THEY WERE YUM...and so very unique as an idea. It was so pretty to look at and the wow factor was definitely there - be sure to take pictures of this one from your 'gram! Overall there was a good balance of flavours across the dish though the strawberry curb was a little on the artificial side for me. It definitely looks better than it tastes but when you look that amazing it's to be expected. An above average dish that you can thoroughly enjoy.
This cafe is so beautiful with its greenery and garden like feel that I would highly recommend coming here just to experience that with the food as a bonus. I will definitely be back to try the amazing list of cocktails though so see you there ;)
