Shanklin Cafe, Hawthorn East 3123

An invitation to Shanklin cafe showed me the true meaning of your 'local' cafe. From the decor to the service to the food - you can tell everything has been thoughtfully considered. Read on for more about my fantastic experience at this small, local cafe.

It is such a cute and cosy cafe that rejects the cookie cutter decor of the usual brunch spots now. There is a beautiful feature wall at the back that reminds me of fish scales and a nice small courtyard for our four legged friends to hang out away from the rain. The service and the warm atmosphere just gave me the community feel that I've been missing from brunch lately - Loved it.

On to food though, the Baked Egg Shakshuka (Red peppers, cherry tomato, chorizo, goat cheese, sourdough) was our first dish. I have to say...the eggs were a bit over done which really affected the flavour of the dish as it was missing a lot of creaminess. The yolk would've been a great sauce to it all. Overall the tomato and spices added strong flavouring which I enjoyed as did the goats cheese but again - sad for that yolk.

Drink break - the Espresso Milkshake. YUM and delish. Sweet with an undertone of coffee. Not great for your morning caffeine kick but still yum as for the sweet tooths and coffee rookies.

Time for dessert - Nutella stuffed Pancakes (Strawberries, grilled banana, oreo crumbles, vanilla ice cream). The pancakes were on the dense side in texture but this complements the Nutella and helps it not soak too much into the pancake. The nutella has been mixed in with something else - I suspect cream-which helps to reduce the richness which I loved. Topping it off was the classic combo of banana and strawberry - perfect.

I couldn't help myself but I had to try the Raspberry and White Chocolate Blondie, which was the bomb! All my favourite flavours in a single slice with a mixture of fresh and sour pops of flavour.

On welcome the owner, Francis, greeted us with such enthusiasm that I thought it was just because of our invitation but as I sat there and as he greeted each person who entered with as much gusto, even the regulars...I knew this place was special. Get here and experience some good old fashioned hospitality!
