Sometimes you find the best when you least expect it - Pizza E Birra definitely sits in that category. I was just looking for a quick dinner before catching a gig when I found this authentic little spot with probably the best Italian I've had in Melbourne!
Walking in I have to admit...I was pretty apprehensive. The interior was standard with not much atmosphere which wasn't helped with how quiet it was. Looks can be deceiving though and once the food came out....boy did my opinion change.
The Tagliere Misto di Salumi (Italian & local small goods, imported buffalo mozzarella, home made doughs) is basically a charcuterie board...but even better. It was beyond delicious with the highlight being the crispy pizza doughs that were so well seasoned and crunchy. The selection of meats was also on point with a good mix of salami, prosciutto and speck. Top it all off with some tasty buffalo mozzarella and you have a well balanced, generous and yummy platter.
Summing up the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara (Spaghetti, Guanciale, organic egg yolks, sarawak pepper aged parmesan) - this is the best carbonara I have ever had. It is perfectly light and entirely fresh. You can taste that there is no cream in it so its been done the traditional way. I can't fault this at all and have to say I have been dreaming of this pasta dish since I left.
Final savoury for the night, Gnocchi Sorrentina (Napoli sauce, bufala, basili). Another light and fresh pasta dish - this spot really impressed me with its pastas. The acidic notes of the tomato are quite prominent so you can tell it's homemade and done like the real deal. It may look and taste simple but it accentuates those simple ingredients and executes the dish perfectly. Heroing the ingredients and bringing out the best in them.
To finish off the night we had Pizza E Birra's traditional tiramisu with all the usual ingredients that make tiramisu an Italian restaurant staple. Delicious and generous in size - definitely a great way to end a quick date night.
What can I say - get here with a loved one or your family and get ready to spoil your tastebuds with some traditional Italian food. The service is impeccable as the staff is so friendly and the place certainly as a following judging from the number of regulars that entered throughout the night. I would say this is the best pasta in town with some great specials so excellent on the back pocket too!
